Vanity of Vanities - A Tribute to Connie Converse

Vanity of Vanities – A Tribute to Connie Converse

Just as we thought there’d be no other new music from Mike Patton in 2017, a new song has been released by Mike Patton on a tribute album to Connie Converse.

Released on John Zorn’s Tzadik records on the 17th of November is Vanity of Vanities – A Tribute to Connie Converse. The album features a number of contemporary artists, including Jennifer Charles (from Lovage, as part of Elysian Fields), Eyvind Kang, Karen O, and Martha Wainwright. Obviously, we’re most interested in Mike Patton’s appearance.  Patton appears alongside Alain Johannes who plays guitar and also on the song. They perform a song titled ‘How Sad, How Lovely’, which is the seventh track on the album.

Here’s how Tzadik describes it:

Connie Converse was a remarkable composer who worked in the 1950s and 1960s. By 1974, depressed over her lack of recognition and success, she packed up her belongings and drove off never to be heard of again. Little known in her lifetime, she is now viewed as a pioneer of the modern singer/songwriter genre. This exciting compilation collects fifteen of her most unique and soulful songs performed by an all-star group of contemporary singer/songwriters. Featuring an informative essay by musician and Converse scholar David Garland, Vanity of Vanities is a heartfelt tribute to one of the unsung heroes of contemporary songwriting.

Lyrics to ‘How Sad How Lovely’ by Connie Converse

How sad, how lovely,

how short, how sweet,

to see that sunset at the end of the street.

And the day gathered into a single light,

and the shadows rising from the brim of the night.

Too few, too few,

are the days that will hold your face,

your face in a blaze of gold.

How sad, how lovely,

how short, how sweet,

to see that sunset at the end of the street.

And the lights going on,

in the shops and the bars,

and the lovers looking for the first little stars.

Like life, like a smile,

like the fall of a leaf,

how sad, how lovely,

how brief.
